Our New Subaru Outback
29/08/24 19:38 Filed in: Home
Last Friday we went to Corvallis Subaru and traded in our charcoal gray Crosstrek in for a Subaru Outback Touring XT. Very nice and well appointed. Lots of bells and whistle.
I thought I'd never get a white car and had disliked them for years. They have added a Pearl White type color with black trim to many car lines, especially Subaru.
Here is a photo of the lovely gem in our driveway. Not an ideal set up for a photo but still good.

David Thayer Ice Cream
My friend, Lisa Salvaggio, recently went to England with her older daughter, Taylor. They spotted the David Thayer Ice Cream shoppe in Bath while on a side trip there. Lisa had to send me a photo of the shoppe.
Bob and I had spotted this shoppe on a long ago earlier visit we took to Bath. David Thayer is the name of our older son so quite the coincidence for us. The ice cream shoppe is still in business which is lovely to see.
A look at David Thayer's Ice Cream.

Mt. St. Helens 2024
A week ago, we traveled up to southwest Washington State to go to the Mt. St. Helens Volcanic National Monument. We watched the eruption and subsequent ash clouds on May 18, 1980 and on from our home then in Vancouver, WA. We have pictures from that time.
The drive was beautiful and the information centers were informative. This all brought back memories. The Johnston Ridge Observatory and Spirit Lake were off limits due to a road landslide which will be another 2 years to repair. Harry Truman who lived at Spirit Lake and lost his life there that Sunday is buried under 150 feet of volcanic ash and mountain slide plus lake level.

Bob and His 71st Birthday

Bob and I went to Albuquerque NM on August 11 through the 13th. I got this photo of him at the EveryCat Health booth and he is wearing his EveryCat Health T-shirt for the occasion that Vickie Fisher gave him. He looks good and felt this picture made him look pretty thin which he liked. He is getting a lot of Facebook birthday wishes today. We hope to go see Alien-Romulus movie tonight. A thunderstorm is brewing our way so an explosive day.
Family and 2024 National Night Out

We held our 2024 National Night Out at Fire Station 35 here in the Berlin Community. We had some new people and regulars who attended. Everyone had a great time. Two members of the Fire Dept. and Capt. Brandon Fountain from the Linn County Sheriff's Dept. were present. A lot of conversation and food also was available. Vada and Olisha came and joined in the gathering of neighbors.
Tulip Flower

Now on to a lovely flower around our house and other homes — the tulip.
"Some say tulips are the most sold flower in the US. We have no proof but we have no doubts either: the tulip is one of the most revered and coveted flowers by Americans. This vividly colored flower is native to Central Asia and was first cultivated in Iran. Over the years, Tulips became a staple of the Ottoman Empire and were eventually introduced in Europe around the 16th century. The first recorded shipment of bulbs was delivered from Istanbul to the Netherlands. Since the tulip is a symbol of the Dutch Republic, they probably made their way into America with the first settlers who arrived in Plymouth.
The word tulip comes either from the Dutch tulpe or the French tulipe , which ultimately derives from the Turkish tülbent , meaning turban."

Vigelund Park Oslo
Whenever we went to Oslo in past years, we would look to visit the Vigelund Park museum of outdoor statues with gardens. It is unique and a bit shocking in its way. We visited with both boys in 1993.
Some details from an article on unusual museums:
One of the more bizarre museums of the world, the Vigeland Sculpture Park is an open-air park home to more than 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland. It's one of Oslo's most-visited tourist destinations, and it's not difficult to understand why. The collection of bizarre statues includes naked human sculptures cast in bronze, iron and stone, and while some are depicted in traditional poses, there are quite a few engaged in weird scenarios, like hugging giant lizards and fighting flying babies. If the weather is sunny, make your way to this park to see humanity portrayed at its strangest.

A rose is a rose is a roseā¦
The word rose derives from the Latin Rosa , which in turn comes from Greek and Old Persian. Ancient Empires like the Egyptians and the Chinese used roses as offerings to the gods and in funeral rituals . Later on, Christians would adopt red and white roses to commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Today, we cultivate roses mostly for their beauty and scent, and they are the go-to flower for lovers, friends, and weddings. And yeah, you guessed it, roses are the most googled flower!
